Award of the Charter

At the last AGM members of the IEPSL showed great interest in starting to award the status of Chartered Membership to suitably qualified members. Council entrusted this task to Council Member, Prof. Niranjanie Ratnayake to study and introduce a system. Based on her proposal, which was accepted by the Council after suitable modifications, IEPSL called a Special General Meeting on 3-12-2010 and presented the proposal to the membership. After some discussion and comments of the members, appropriate changes were done to the proposal and the procedure for Award of Charter was accepted by the membership to start implementing during early 2011. Application forms and assessment criteria were approved by the Council, and Applications were called in early April and closed on 10th May 2011. Applications were received from 19 eligible members, While 17 applicants had postgraduate degrees at Master’s or higher level and 12 years of experience, which exempted from the two written papers, while 2 applicants did not have Master’s level qualifications.

Council nominated three panels to conduct the Professional Reviews for the applicants. This being the first time that the IEPSL is awarding the Charter, there were no senior chartered members to be appointed for the Panels. Thus, the Council was very careful in identifying panel members who were sufficiently senior and experienced in the Environmental field, as well as respected in their own professions. Based on the background of the applicants the applicants were divided among the three panels, so that there was at least one Panel member who could assess the competence of the applicant in his field of specialization.. Based on the guidelines given in the Award of the Charter, Professional Review Interviews were conducted in July 2011.

Nine candidates were recommended to Council for award of the Charter after the Professional Review. Council accepted the recommendations, and circulated the names of the selected candidates among the general membership, in order to obtain the consensus of the membership on the suitability of the candidates, before final approval. In the absence of any objections from the membership, the Council approved the Award of the Charter to these 9 candidates. Certificates awarded for them at the AGM held on 2011..

Offer Corporate Membership

The overall objective of establishing the IEPSL is to uphold the dignity and raise reputation of the environmental profession in Sri Lanka, and to extend the profession and its services to the country at large for the benefit of the public. In order to achieve this objective, especially to provide services to manage environment, active participation of the corporate sector is mandatory.

Therefore IEPSL decided to extend its activities offer membership to corporate sector organizations as well. To offering Corporate Membership (CM) is to maintain high level of environmental standards of the CM and extend benefits beyond the CMs premises in order to improve the quality of nature and people so that sustainability of development in Sri Lanka is ensured.
