Message from the President of the Institute of Environmental Professionals Sri Lanka
The Institute of Environmental professionals Sri Lanka was initiated in 2006 with the blessing of then minister of Environment H.E. the President Maithripala Sirisena. It was a much needed requirement, to have an independent professional body for environmental professionals in various disciplines and sectors. They would work together and help the country take educated and scientifically sound decisions in the development process.
Environment management has to be taken seriously when economic development is considered. These are two distinctive activities which confront each other and therefore it is of utmost necessity that they are considered with a long term vision. Considering the rapid economic development, ignoring the environmental consequences will lead to disastrous consequences in the future. This is common to many developing countries including Sri Lanka where governments want short term rapid economic development at the expense of the natural resources of the country.
The Paris Accord 2015 on climate change under United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is a landmark agreement in which the whole world came together after observing climate related disasters affecting the world. In order to achieve the targets agreed on all countries have to take hard decisions and positive practical actions. Countries have agreed to the UN proposal on sustainable development goals which will help development while tackling global temperature rise and climate change associated disasters
The IEPSL will work towards environment management and provide appropriate support to the government and the general public to achieve sustainable development of the country through low carbon pathways.
