The Awareness Program on Sustainable Chemical Use & Environmental Compliance for SMEs, held online on 01 September 2026, was successfully concluded, marking a valuable opportunity for knowledge-sharing and awareness-building among industry professionals and other interested participants. Dr. Thiwanka De Fonseka, Chief Sustainability Officer at Komar, shared his expertise, professional experience, and practical insights with the participants. His valuable contribution enhanced the learning experience and provided participants with a deeper understanding of sustainable chemical management and environmental compliance. The session was moderated by Ms. Ruwani Jayasekera.

The program aimed to raise awareness of the importance of responsible chemical management and environmental compliance, particularly among Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). As businesses continue to strengthen their sustainability practices, effective chemical management and adherence to environmental requirements play a crucial role in reducing environmental impacts, protecting employee health and safety, and promoting responsible business operations.

The session provided valuable insights into sustainable chemical use, safe chemical handling, environmental responsibilities, and practical approaches that SMEs can adopt to improve their chemical management practices. It also emphasised the importance of strengthening workplace awareness, improving operational practices, and integrating environmental considerations into everyday business activities.

A key takeaway from the session was that sustainable chemical management does not always require significant financial investments. Simple yet effective measures, such as proper chemical storage and labelling, safe handling and disposal practices, improved employee awareness, and minimising chemical waste, can contribute significantly to better environmental performance and regulatory compliance.

The program also brought together industry professionals, Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) practitioners, sustainability representatives, and students, whose active participation and engagement contributed to a meaningful exchange of knowledge and perspectives.

The successful completion of the program highlighted the importance of continuous awareness-building, knowledge-sharing, and capacity development in promoting environmentally responsible business practices.

By encouraging SMEs to adopt safer, more sustainable, and environmentally compliant chemical management practices, such initiatives contribute to reducing environmental risks, strengthening workplace safety, and supporting a more sustainable and responsible business environment.
