The Institute of Environmental Professionals Sri Lanka (IEPSL) conducted a successful one-day training program on Environmental Assessments for Sampath Bank PLC’s credit officers on October 25, 2024. Held at the Institute of Bankers Auditorium in Colombo, the training program hosted 70 participants and provided essential training in sustainable financing and environmental assessment.

The program, coordinated by Prof. Kithsiri Dissanayake and Dr. Pradeep Gajanayake, featured presentations by leading experts on critical topics. Mrs. Shiranee Yasaratne, President of IEPSL, delivered an insightful session on The Move to Sustainable Financing in Sri Lanka. Mrs. Dharshani Lahandupura, an environmental lawyer, covered Applicable Legal Framework and Regulations, providing essential legal context for sustainable practices. Mrs. Kanthi de Silva, Former Deputy Director General of the CEA, presented an Introduction to Environmental Assessments, while Senior Professor Hemanthi Ranasinghe from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura discussed Common Environmental Impacts across Sectors and Key Components of an IEE Report.

Further, Mr. D.M.S.S Bandara, Assistant Director of the EPC, presented on the Environmental Protection Licensing Process, and Mr. Ajith Ethugala, an Environmental & Social Safeguard Specialist, spoke about Environmental & Social Risk Evaluation in Lending. Mrs. Ramani Ellepola, Former Director General of the CEA, provided practical insights with her session on Useful Practical Applications for Credit Officers.

The program also included a case study activity facilitated by Mrs. Kanthi de Silva, where participants engaged in practical applications of their learning. The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, closing remarks, and the award of certificates to participants, acknowledging their commitment to sustainable banking practices.

This initiative highlights IEPSL’s commitment to advancing environmental awareness and sustainable finance practices within Sri Lanka’s banking sector.
