On 5th June 2025, the Institute of Environmental Professionals Sri Lanka (IEPSL) proudly partnered with the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) and the Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSD) to host a full-day program in celebration of World Environment Day under the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The event was generously sponsored by Cleantech (Pvt) Ltd, a key industry leader in sustainable waste management and circular economy solutions. Held at the OUSL Main Auditorium, the event brought together university staff, students, professionals, and stakeholders from academia, government, industry, and the general public to foster dialogue and knowledge-sharing on plastic pollution and sustainability.

Inaugural Session and Policy Launch

The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Yohan Mahagamage, Director of CESSD, followed by addresses from Senior Professor P.M.C. Thilakarathne, Vice Chancellor of OUSL, and Mr. Asela Iddawela, President of IEPSL. A keynote was delivered by Dr. Kapila Mahesh Rajapaksha, Environmental Specialist (South Asia Region) at SACEP. A highlight of the event was the launch of OUSL’s Plastic Policy, with an overview presented by Dr. Mahagamage. On behalf of IEPSL, Dr. Pradeep Gajanayake expressed appreciation and highlighted the importance of institutional commitment to environmental responsibility.

Workshop Sessions – Knowledge for Action

The workshop, titled “Understanding Plastics and Solutions for a Sustainable Future,” featured a series of dynamic and insightful presentations addressing key dimensions of plastic pollution. Dr. Yohan Mahagamage (CESSD, OUSL) opened the session with “Plastics in Our Lives: From Innovation to Pollution,” setting the stage for a critical examination of our relationship with plastic. Mr. N.S. Gamage (CEA) followed with “Turning the Tide: Laws and Policies for Plastic Reduction,” shedding light on the regulatory landscape. Dr. Randika Jayasinghe (UNSW) shared practical approaches through her session “From Bin to Better: Strategies for Plastic Waste Management in Sri Lanka,” while Mr. Kasun Thennakoon (Cleantech Pvt Ltd) presented innovative industry solutions in “Reimagining Plastics: Circular Economy and Recycling Solutions.” The workshop concluded with a vibrant panel discussion, encouraging participants to explore real-world solutions and the power of collaboration in tackling plastic pollution.

Industry Insight: Visit to Eco-Spindles Sri Lanka

In the afternoon, participants embarked on an educational factory visit to Eco-Spindles Sri Lanka, gaining firsthand insight into PET plastic recycling and yarn production processes. This visit emphasized the role of industry innovation in building a circular economy and reducing plastic waste in Sri Lanka.
